    Basic Function of the Position

    The Press/Internet Publishing Assistant drafts social media for all Embassy platforms in both English and Bulgarian; monitors relevant social media sites and alerts the Public Affairs Office to postings of note; assists in drafting and disseminating press releases, as well as assists at media events; translates text between Bulgarian/English for public affairs use.

    The position is one of a 3-member Daily Press Report team, which summarizes and analyzes Bulgarian media each morning by monitoring press, radio, television, and internet. The Daily Press Brief team produces a written summary by 9 a.m. each morning. The position attends the Daily Press Brief one week per month and overviews the day’s news and implications with Embassy Management.

    Qualifications and Evaluations

    Requirements: EXPERIENCE: Minimum three years experience in journalism or creative writing. This must include extensive social media content preparation and editing experience.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE: Advanced knowledge of writing and social media content development; advanced knowledge of Bulgarian politics and political issues. Must understand political and cultural sensitivities of both countries. Must understand American and Bulgarian media and be thoroughly familiar with Bulgarian print, radio, television, and online media operations.

    Education Requirements: University degree in journalism, politics, international relations, philology or literature.

    This may be tested:

    LANGUAGE: Fluent spoken and written English (4/4 level) required. Fluent spoken and written Bulgarian (4/4 level) required.

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Excellent writing and editing skills in both English and Bulgarian. Ability to do written translation from English to Bulgarian, and Bulgarian to English. Ability to write quickly under deadline pressure. Must have highly effective interpersonal skills in order to deal with a wide range of media contacts.
